Jibba Jabba in New York 星期六, 09月 27, 2008

I had the opportunity to check out the NBA 2K9 launch event in New York City last night. Some of the NBA’s premier athletes, including NBA 2K9’s cover athlete Kevin Garnett, were on hand at the Soho-based event for interviews and a NBA 2K9 tournament to see if the Celtics dominate basketball gaming as well. In addition to checking out their stick skill on the virtual court though, I simply couldn’t pass up the chance to trash talk with some of the game’s elite.

I started by sitting down with KG just prior to the tournament to guage the role of trash talking in both the NBA and while rocking fools in NBA 2K9. I mentioned to Garnett that Andre Iguodala’s skills looked very impressive as he dismantled a member of his entourage in NBA 2K9. Garnett simply acknowledged that there was some skill on display but nothing that had him too worried. Not impressed with his conservative response (especially because I wanted to relay some trash talk to Andre), I asked Garnett what kind of trash talking he uses in the NBA. His response…”I just speak the truth.” Although this implied some trash talking, it still wasn’t definitive.

I figured I would kick it up a notch. You won’t want to miss Garnett’s responses to “How would you respond to an Andrew Bynum claim that, if he was playing in the finals, he would have probably posterized you?” (no, Bynum didn’t really say this) and “Don’t you think the Celtics got a little lucky in Game 4 that Kobe Bryant kept trusting his teammates instead of going into MJ mode?” Funny stuff. I think we may include these clips in the next episode of The Lineup.

Garnett’s trash talking strategy: Just speaking the truth.

Just from Andre Iguodala’s first few responses, I could tell he was going to be an easier nut to crack with regards to trash talking. He immediately confirmed that, despite having many teammates that play the NBA 2K series, he is probably the best and he routinely schools the younger guys on the team. He even indicated that his NBA experience gives him an advantage over other NBA 2K9 players because he “knows which guys can shoot and where they like to shoot the ball from.”

While I did harass Andre about being only the 11th best shooting guard in NBA 2K9 despite great production the last two years, I didn’t have the heart to dis him or the 76ers. I saw Andre’s style in NBA 2K9 and, while I’m pretty sure I would wreck him, he’s got legitimate skill and uses some of the same cheesy tactics that I use. Besides, he gave me an answer on who he thought was the worst NBA basketball player ever and he supported of my plan to institute an affirmative action policy in the NBA mandating a percentage of Indians into the league. Clearly, he’s the real deal.

Iguodala was not pleased with 2K’s assessment that he is only the 11th best shooting guard in the NBA.

I was going to interview Rajon Rondo next to question him on his abysmal free throw shooting rating (61) in NBA 2K9 but I noticed one Kevin Garnett fan in attendence that I simply had to interview. That fan was world’s fastest man Usain Bolt, a guy a knew has trash talking down to a science. Bolt claimed that while trash talking used to play a greater role in track and field, the top runners all know each other well and it’s “all business” before a race. Clearly that doesn’t apply 75m into a race though.

I also asked Bolt what he thought about Terrell Owens’ comment that he was the faster runner. Usain replied, “Yeah, I heard he was talking stuff. But I ain’t scared of nobody so if he thinks he can beat me, bring it on man.” Listen in on next week’s From the Bleachers as I will be playing a clip of Bolt’s response to a future NFL career. I don’t want to spoil it but suffice it to say there is some interest.

Bolt’s take on trash talking… “Na, it’s all business”

Well Played: PARIS HILTON?!?!?!!!!

It has been an extremely long week, so it’s possible that I’ve entirely taken leave of my senses, but I feel like…Paris Hilton looked kind of great heading into see Letterman:

spl46384_001.jpg

That color is great on her, that dress isn’t too fussy. I don’t care for the bag, but she looks sort of like….chic and relaxed. What’s the DEAL? Is it because she’s all in love? Is it because she’s mellowing with age? Is it her hair cut?

Seriously, let’s look at the haircut:

spl51223_003.jpg

It’s like….flattering and stuff, right? Right? I’m right, aren’t I? I’m not beginning my slow descent into celebrity-gossip-induced madness, right? She looks kinda good. RIGHT?!!!

VALKYRIE HAS A NEW TRAILER 星期六, 09月 27, 2008

“Valkyrie” has been plagued by bad press for months and had it’s release date pushed back several times, despite a big name cast and crew led by Tom Cruise, director Brian Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, the worlds greatest screenwriter.  The movie is about the failed plot to kill Hitler by Nazi officers, who clearly didn’t learn anything by all their failed attempts at killing Indiana Jones.  Just shoot him, he’s standing right there, I swear to god if you shoot him it will work.

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) — Health experts endorsed in Washington, D.C. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s latest recommendation that all children between the ages of 6 months and 18 receive a flu shot, according to media reports Thursday.

This means the number of children targeted for flu vaccinations this season will increase by about 30 million.

The expanded flu-shot project is supported by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

By increasing the target groups, health experts hoped, there will be a slash of the amount of time children and parents stay home from school and work, and a slash of the need for antibiotics to treat influenza.

School-age children have the highest rate of influenza in the U.S., according to William Schaffner, president-elect of the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases.

While influenza usually breaks out the most between December and March, people should be better vaccinated this month, Schaffner urged, suggesting a record of 146 million doses will be available.

”Flu is very transmissible in school,” said Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers. “This is truly an effort not only to improve the individual health of children but to affect the population of children as they congregate in schools and day care.”

Every year, between 5 and 20 percent of the U.S. population (15 million to 60 million) get the flu; 200,000 are hospitalized and about 35,000 die from influenza-related complications.

The Centters did not changed its recommendations regarding other groups who should get a flu shot, including people 50 and older, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant women and health care workers.

Overall, it indicated about 265.1 million people, or 85 percent of the U.S. population, should get a flu shot.

In the words of Gerberding, everyone should be vaccined except kids 6 months old and younger and “completely healthy adults who have no contact with someone who isn’t.”

”The message for most people is get your flu shot,” Gerberding said. “It’s an advantage to you or someone you care about.”

·McCain proposed to delay his first debate with Obama to focus on the financial crisis.
·However, Obama said the debate should not be postponed.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — U.S. Republican presidential nominee John McCain proposed Wednesday to delay his first debate with Democratic opponent Barack Obama to focus on the financial crisis, but Obama said he will go ahead.

In a statement, McCain said it was time for both parties to come together to solve economic crisis.

”I am calling on the president to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself,” he said.

Both McCain and Obama are senators.

It was not immediately clear how extensive the suspension he announced would be — whether it would include dropping television advertising or just canceling scheduled appearances.

McCain’s announcement came just hours before President George W. Bush was scheduled to address the nation on the troubled state of the U.S. financial system — a problem for which his administration has proposed a 700-billion-U.S.-dollar bailout.

However, Obama, who is in Florida preparing for the debate, said the debate should not be postponed.

He said his campaign and that of McCain were still working on a joint statement the bailout plan.

Americans need to watch a debate between him and McCain “now more than ever,” Obama added.

”It’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in approximately 40 days will be responsible for dealing with this mess,” Obama said.

”It is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once,” he added.

Organizers of U.S. presidential debates confirmed the Sept. 26 debate will go ahead.

The Commission on Presidential Debates, CPD, has notified University of Mississippi, the host of the Sept. 26 debate, to proceed as scheduled.

LHASA, July 11 (Xinhua) — Forty-two people had been jailed so far for their involvement in the March 14 riot in Tibet’s capital Lhasa, but no death penalty had been handed down, a senior official said.

They were convicted of arson, robbery, disrupting public order and assaulting government offices, among other crimes, Palma Trily, executive vice chairman of Tibet, said Thursday at a press conference for Indian and Italian journalists.

Sentences for the first 30 people were handed down on April 29 by the Intermediate People’s Court of Lhasa, and ranged from three years to life.

On June 19 and 20, four local courts in Lhasa and the Shannan Prefecture announced prison terms for another 12.

Meanwhile, another 116 suspects were on trial, said Palma Trily.

”It would be decided under Chinese laws whether some would be sentenced to death,” he said.

Following the Lhasa violence, police detained 953 people, including 362 who turned themselves in.

The violence involved widespread attacks against people and property, in which 18 innocent civilians and one police officer died and 382 civilians and 241 police were injured.

Rioters also torched 120 houses and 84 vehicles and looted 1,367 shops, resulting in a direct economic loss of 320 million yuan (about 47 million U.S. dollars).

The government gave tax cuts and subsidies of more than 200 million yuan to the affected shops, said Xiao Bai, vice mayor of Lhasa.

Yishion clothing store, the retail outlet where five female sales staff died in a fire during the riot, got 1 million yuan of concessional loan and has re-opened.

”Thanks to the joint efforts of people and governments from all levels, Lhasa has restored social order,” Palma Trily said.

KATHMANDU, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Nepali police on Sunday afternoon detained over 100 Tibetan separatists involved in anti-China activities in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu.

At around 3:10 p.m. local time (0925 GMT), the separatists thronged the visa office of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, shouting anti-China slogans and waving the so-called “Tibet independence” flag.

The shops, travel agencies and airline offices near the visa office had to suspend their business after the Nepali police blocked the street and tried to confine the rally to the sidewalks.

Traffic police had to evacuate the jammed vehicles by a one-way lane.

”Nepal’s law allows arresting those whose activities are adversely affecting the general public. We have arrested them to maintain law and order in the city,” Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kathmandu Jayamukunda Khanal said the general public of Nepal was suffering from the protests, when interviewed by Xinhua reporter on July 22.

”We are facing many disturbances from the continuous agitation. The daily activities in the capital are disrupted. Traffic is halted in places they protest,” said Khanal, the administrative chief of Kathmandu.

Nepali policemen on duty told Xinhua reporter that around 150 Tibetan separatists were detained, who are supposed to be released after inquiry in police stations.

Observers here noted that the Tibetan separatists are taking advantages of Nepal, the youngest republic in the world, at its historic turning point. A republic government has not been established since Nepal declared a republic on May 28 by its Constituent Assembly.

The Nepali government has repeatedly said that Tibet is an inalienable part of China and that it will not allow anti-China activities on its territory.

Tibetan separatists have staged anti-China protests since mid-March in Kathmandu, which occurs at around 3 p.m. local time on every Friday. The activities often went ugly, disrupting the city traffic and causing conflicts and injuries.

Chinese Ambassador Zheng Xianglin said earlier that some Tibetans who refused to participate in anti-China activities became targets of criminal acts of beating and smashing.

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) — China issued a white paper on Thursday to acquaint the world with its efforts on the protection and development of Tibetan culture, refuting the charge of the so-called “cultural genocide” in Tibet.

It is “published to give the international community a better understanding of the reality of the protection and development of Tibetan culture” and “to further the protection and development of Tibetan culture”, the white paper on Protection and Development of Tibetan Culture said.

The white paper consists of six parts, “Foreword”, “Learning, Use and Development of the Spoken and Written Tibetan Languages”, “Inheritance, Protection and Promotion of the Tibetan Cultural Heritage”, “Religious Beliefs and Native Customs Respected”, “All-round Development of Modern Science, Education and the Media” and “Conclusion”.

It is “citing facts to expose the lie about the ‘cultural genocide’ in Tibet fabricated by the 14th Dalai Lama and his cohorts”, and “exposing the deceptive nature of the ‘cultural autonomy of Tibet’ they clamor for”.

Over the past half century, and especially since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policies in 1978, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the protection and development of Tibetan culture, it said.

”With great enthusiasm and a highly responsible attitude… the Chinese government has dedicated a large amount of manpower, materials and funds to the protection and promotion of fine traditional Tibetan culture, and vigorously developed modern scientific, educational and cultural undertakings in Tibet, bringing about unprecedented protection and development of Tibetan culture,” it stated.

”Dalai Lama and his clique and the anti-China forces in the West conspire to force the Tibetan ethnic group and its culture to stagnate and remain in a state similar to the Middle Ages, in effect to become living fossils, while they themselves enjoy the fruits of modern civilization and culture,” said the white paper released by the Information Office of the State Council, which is the seventh of its kind on Tibet.

Tibetan culture is a lustrous pearl of Chinese culture as well as a precious part of world culture, it said.

”The Tibetan people have developed their culture by means of interaction ad fusion with other cultures, especially that of the Han people. Over the centuries, Tibetan culture has remained a spiritual pillar for the Tibetan ethnic group,” it said.

Before 1959 the 14th Dalai Lama monopolized both political and religious power. The serf owners, accounting for less than five percent of the total population of old Tibet, possessed all the means of production and cultural and educational resources in Tibet, monopolizing the material and cultural wealth of the region.

The Democratic Reform in 1959 abolished theocratic feudal serfdom, while ending the monopoly of the minority of nobility and senior monks over culture and education. The broad masses of serfs and slaves were politically, economically and mentally emancipated, and became the real masters in protecting, developing and enjoying Tibetan culture, according to the white paper.

”The reform made Tibetan culture a people’s culture, and inaugurated a promising future for its development,” it said.

The white paper said facts show that there has been no “cultural genocide” in Tibet at all over the past half century and more.

On the contrary, the traditional culture of Tibet has been appropriately inherited, effectively protected and vigorously promoted, while modern Tibetan culture, oriented toward modernization, the future and the rest of the world, has opened up to the outside world and achieved rapid and all-round development propelled by Tibet’s economic and social development, it said.

”It is safe to say that the situation concerning the protection, prosperity and development of Tibetan culture in any historical period of old Tibet bears no comparison with the situation in Tibet today, and the achievements in this regard are undeniable to anyone who respects facts,” it stated.
